My favourite "song" activity

Here comes my favourite "song" activity for all levels of learning.

At first I hand my learners papers with lyrics on them. The document should be prepared in advance by the following method:

- you find lyrics of a song via Internet

- you make gaps as in the example attached (2 variants - 1 with the first part of a line missing, 2 with the second part of the line missing)

From the first impression my learners have to decipher the name of the song.

Then of course they start working in pairs, sitting back to back with papers of lyrics on their hands. They should also have pens or pencils for filling in the gaps. They start discussing the song repeating sentences several times to each other seeing the only variant you have given them. Multiple repetitions will force them to memorize words and whole phrases. Writing is very important.

When everyone has finished we listen to the song. This will enforce their listening skills.

In the end they should guess the singer and tell some words about him. I have made this exercise with the song "Let it snow" by Frank Sinatra.
The ones who finish first has to search in Wikipedia Frank Sinatra, others make translation of the song. Some may remember songs with the word “Let”. All this is a speaking activity.

This particular exercise is one of the best from the point of view of covering all of the language activities (reading, listening, speaking and writing). I believe it should be done once a month for motivating your learners.

My chart with "song" exercises coming soon.
